Trade Policy in a Nutshell

Trade has had a turbulent few years, with pandemic disruptions and supply chain challenges, geoeconomic fragmentation, rising inequality, rapid digital transformation and increasing climate change impacts. How can, and should, trade policy respond?

If you deal with trade as a policymaker or in the business world, this course is essential to understanding the 21st-century global landscape. This one-day “nutshell” offers a broad overview of major trade policy topics and where to go to find more information when you need it.  It also gives a fascinating snapshot of major global trends such as globalisation, sustainability and development.  The emphasis throughout is on interaction, discussion and developing the practical tools to understand and engage on international trade issues more effectively.

Programme topics include:

  • New Zealand trade policy, including Trade for All

  • The WTO - functions, principles and negotiations

  • FTAs

  • Goods trade - tariffs, tariff rate quotas, import licensing

  • Services and digital trade - what they are, trade barriers and trade rules

  • Non-tariff measures including SPS and TBT, non-tariff barriers and subsidies

  • Settling disputes

  • Sustainable development, trade inclusion and environmental sustainability

  • Future directions: fragmentation, protectionism, risks, opportunities and prospects
